1. Where are you from?
My name is Erika Gonzalez. I’m from Guerrero, Mexico — south of Mexico City.
2. How long have you been in the USA?
I have been here for 27 years.
3. What do you feel — where is your home now? Or what is your home now?
At first, it was difficult to be far from my land and family. But now, I love Fort Collins.
4. If you feel that the USA has become your home, how long did it take to feel that way? Did you do anything to help make it feel like home, or did the feeling come naturally over time?
I felt comfortable three years later — when I met my husband.
5. What helps you feel at home in a new place?
When I met friends and my husband who spoke the same language.
6. Who or what makes you feel like you belong somewhere? Why? For example: Parents? Friends? Culture or language? Nature? Or maybe something else?
I feel like I belong in Colorado, especially in Fort Collins, because I love the mountains, the rivers — and especially the people. The people in Fort Collins are kind.
7. Do you think it’s possible to have more than one home? Why or why not?
I think we can have only one home — the home where you are with your family.
For example, if you have a husband and children, the country or state doesn’t matter — as long as you are together. That’s the most important thing.
8. What advice would you give to someone who is trying to feel at home in a new country?
Find new friends and new hobbies to keep your mind busy.
9. How do you say “home” in your native language (using English letters)?
Mi casa es tu casa.
(My home is your home.)
