Oleksandr

1. Where are you from?

Ukraine, Kherson.

2. How long have you been in the USA?

I spent a wonderful 10 months in Fort Collins.

3. What do you feel — where is your home now? Or what is your home now?

My home is where my family and relatives are, or where I feel comfortable. Everything we bring with us (culture, habits, art) is always inside us!!!

4. If you feel that a new place has become your home, how long did it take you to feel this way? Did you do anything to make yourself feel at home, or did this feeling come naturally over time?

A new place becomes home gradually. First of all, it’s the people you communicate with, the religious community, culture, habits, small things in everyday life — and, of course, your positive attitude toward all of this.

5. What helps you feel at home in a new place?

The opportunity to communicate, native food, and like-minded people.

6. Has your sense of home changed over time? What does “home” mean to you now, after moving to a new place?

Home used to be a geographical concept, but now it is a place where you feel comfortable.

7. Who or what gives you a sense of belonging to a place? Why? For example: Parents? Friends? Culture or language? Nature? Or maybe something else?

A community gives you a sense of belonging to a new place — this is the first thing. When you are involved in community affairs (exhibitions, seminars, volunteering, joint events, etc.), everything else is a nice bonus.

Although we can’t help but note the beautiful nature in Colorado, which definitely affects a person’s worldview…

8. Do you think it is possible to have more than one home? Why or why not?

It is possible and necessary. Home is where you feel comfortable and happy.

It is also desirable to have a phone charger in the modern world 🙂. If you have a charger, you are connected — and almost at home!

9. What advice would you give to a person who is trying to feel at home in a new place?

Be yourself and don’t worry — everything will come with time.

10. How do you say “home” in your native language (using English letters)?

DIM or VDOMA.
